Houston Paternity Attorneys

Let Us Help You Establish Paternity

In order to exercise your rights as a father, you will have to establish paternity, or legal fatherhood. In Texas, an unmarried woman who gives birth automatically gains full custody of the child. If a woman is married and gives birth, her husband is automatically granted joint custody. If the real father is not the husband, he must petition the court and submit to a DNA test to prove paternity.

There are two ways to establish paternity – you can do so by:

  • Voluntarily signing an Acknowledgement of Paternity form (the mother must sign, too).
  • Submitting a Petition to Adjudicate Parentage, which may require the alleged father to take a DNA test. Any party – the mother, the father, the child, or even the state if it is providing public assistance – may submit this petition.

At Slate & Associates, Attorneys at Law, our paternity attorneys in Houston have experience representing both mothers and fathers who are seeking paternity. Let us help you through this complex and emotional situation.

Call (281) 476-9447 now to get started with an initial consultation.

The Importance of Establishing Paternity

As a man, you are unable to exercise your parental rights until paternity has been established. This means you will have no access to your child until you are recognized as the legal father.

As a mother, you deserve financial support from your child’s father, whether you are married or not. The only way to receive child support is to establish paternity and receive a child support order.

Establishing paternity benefits both the parents and the child.

It helps to:

  • Ensure that the child has a relationship with both parents
  • Educate the child about his/her family history, including medical histories
  • Provide the child with access to medical insurance and other benefits, such as Social Security, veterans’ benefits, inheritance, and life insurance
  • Ensure that parental responsibilities are shared rather than being left to the mother
  • Ensure that the child receives adequate care from financial contributions from both parents

Whether you are a mother seeking support from your child’s father or a father seeking custody rights to your biological child, Slate & Associates, Attorneys at Law is here to help.
